The osprey along with all modern birds are part of the theropod family of dinosaurs, and like all birds, they share many similarities with dinosaurs particularly those of the maniraptoran group such as Deinonychus which provided an important skeletal indicator of birds' relationship to dinosaurs when discovered in 1969.
